It made sense to try out the batch before sending them out, so I made up one jar then made the cookies. They were not good. I would have said they were nasty, but they were not that bad, just not so great.
The next recipe was also not good.
The third recipe I made I could not actually jam into the jar, so that was out.
What could I do? I had already purchased many many widemouth Ball jars and I just could not let them sit around without treat-making ingredients inside. So I went along to the internet, found a ton of recipes, took the first one that I had the ingredients for and went to work. I did not make up the cookies to sample them. By this time it was about urgent to get the ingredients in the jars and put the door.
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies in a Quart Jar
Put the ingredients in the widemouth quart jar and tamp down after each layer.
In a bowl place 1.5 cups all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix well then place in the bottom of the jar.
Add the remaining ingredients one ingredient at a time and tamp after each layer.
1/4 cup oatmeal (I used old-fashioned rolled oats)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 cup chocolate chips (I used mini chocolate chips)
Some people think you need to put cotton balls on top of the jar but I did not do that.
After closing up the jar, make a label with the instructions for making the jar into actual cookies, also adding in the ingredients in case people have allergies.
In this case the instructions are:
Melt 1/2 cup butter and add 1 large egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix well, then pour on top of the cookie mix you have put into a good-sized bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon and eventually use your hands, if needed, then form into balls the size you want them to be. My recipe made 18 cookies when I made them.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. then bake for 10-12 minutes.
Today I finally made up the last jar of cookie mix for Dear One who was just dying for something sweet.
This is what they looked like. These cookies tasted really good. I did actually try them out myself.
Have fun with these.
Pattie, they look delicious! We will be going to SC in May for granddaughters graduation. Maybe we can meet up.
