Evening Wildlife

On one of our last evenings in Vermont we were sitting at the table eating supper.  A lovely doe white-tailed deer walked across the yard right in front of us.  I rushed to the east door to the porch and there she was just munching her way across the yard!  Her tail was flipping like crazy.  Deer flies are a real problem this year, and they were really after her.  Poor thing.

It was such a joy to see her. I suspect we won't see a lot of wildlife in our backyard in South Carolina.  Unless it is alligators, which I am hoping will NOT be there.  I questioned the real estate agent about alligators in the pond at the back of our property. He was rather evasive...yikes.

Wildlife Near Us: Red Tail Hawk

We have had a red tail hawk perch in the tree outside the office window.  We first saw the hawk last fall when the leaves dropped.  We enjoyed him all winter.  On Monday I saw him again outside the window.  Then when I was walking home I saw him on this light pole.

So nice to se the hawk so close by.  Of course, when he, or she, saw me over his shoulder, he moved so I could not show the red tail.  Oh well.  This is a nice remembrance of him.

Wildlife Near Us

Recently I went out for a walk at lunch time.  Many of the trees had yellow hanging tubes on them.  I could not imagine what they were.  When I got up close to one of them I saw a creepy sight:

Can you tell what this is?

It is a yellow jacket trap.  It creeped me out.  There were lots of them around the park.  I have not been out for a while so it was a total surprise.

Newsy Bit: Nature Comes Calling!

For years now we have seen wild turkeys in our area.  I have wanted to take photographs but usually have been driving when I we saw them.  Today THERE THEY WERE!!!  Walking through our backyard.

My shock and pleasure kept me in my seat watching them until they were mostly past.  I realized I could finally get a picture so I leaped up and got the camera.

Here is one of several pictures I took through our screened window.  This picture is less that lovely but it shows that we had wild turkeys walking RIGHT THERE!!!  So exciting.  If I had gotten up quicker, maybe I could have gotten a picture outside. It would have been clearer.

Wild turkeys outside our window!

Some day I will actually learn how to use software to turn a photograph into something better...
